Welcome
Individually decorated bedrooms overlook the Indian Ocean, expansive terraces invite al fresco dining, and 360-degree deck views take in either the ocean or the enchanting dune forest, depending on where guests choose to gather.
Owners Graham and Lucy remain the cornerstone of the management team, joined more recently by Georgie and Keagan, whose shared love of Mozambique, adventure and the ocean comes through in the way the property is run. Colina Verde describes itself as a community built with the hands and knowledge of those who greet guests at the door, a place to stay grounded or free-fall into the unknown, recharging and reconnecting amid Mozambique’s untouched nature.
Getting there
Colina Verde sits on the Machangulo Peninsula in southern Mozambique, a stretch of coastline known for white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters and lush greenery, and home to a genuinely diverse range of outdoor activities. The peninsula’s rich biodiversity spans vibrant coral reefs and rare marine species, making it a strong base for both relaxation and adventure.
Getting to Colina Verde is an experience in itself, with several transfer options available. A helicopter transfer from Maputo International Airport takes a scenic 15 minutes over the Bay of Maputo, while a light aircraft transfer takes around 25 minutes followed by a short drive to the villa. For larger groups, a boat transfer offers a 75-minute crossing across the bay, and a 4×4 road trip is also possible for experienced drivers, though road conditions require some caution.
Where to stay
Colina Verde’s seven bedrooms each carry their own distinct character, the Whale Room offers a serene ocean view embraced by lush trees, with a comfortable king-size bed, an invigorating outdoor shower and a soothing view from the bath, while the Inhaca Room delivers an unrivalled vista of Inhaca Island alongside a spacious king-size bed, a beautiful copper bath, both indoor and outdoor showers, and an open fireplace for cooler evenings.
Beyond the bedrooms, guests have access to a cosy fireplace in the living room, a snug study for quiet reading, and expansive decks offering 360-degree views across either the ocean or the dune forest. The villa welcomes guests year-round with a base rate for up to six, with additional guests charged per adult or child, giving groups flexibility depending on numbers.
On the island
Colina Verde offers a full range of coastal activities, from snorkelling to delicious picnics on the beach, all designed to be enjoyed with loved ones at a relaxed, unhurried pace. The Machangulo Peninsula’s position gives guests access to vibrant coral reefs and a rich variety of marine species, alongside more general outdoor pursuits such as fishing, kayaking and wildlife safaris in the surrounding area.
The villa’s conservation work adds a genuinely meaningful dimension to a stay, Colina Verde runs an active in-house fish tagging and monitoring programme, having tagged and released more than 550 fish caught by guests, with the resulting data contributing to a published scientific paper on Giant Trevally movements between South Africa and Mozambique. Guests can get directly involved by funding acoustic tags used to track apex predators for ongoing marine park research.
Food and drink
Colina Verde’s talented in-house chef celebrates seasonal flavours and locally sourced ingredients, with a particular focus on seafood complemented by produce from the villa’s own vegetable garden. Meals are served in diverse locations throughout the house, creating a different memorable setting for every occasion, while daily afternoon cake in the lobby and sundowner cocktails with delectable bites round out the day’s dining rhythm.
Seasons
Colina Verde welcomes guests year-round, though the dry season from May to September brings the clearest water for diving and snorkelling along with cooler, more comfortable temperatures. The warmer months from November to March offer warmer swimming water but a higher chance of tropical storms, which can affect boat and helicopter transfers to the peninsula.
Perfect for
Colina Verde suits large families and groups of friends of six to eighteen guests wanting a fully serviced, exclusive-use villa that feels like a private home rather than a hotel. Its strong conservation programme and community focus also appeal to travellers who want their stay to contribute meaningfully to marine research and local development, alongside a genuinely relaxed, restorative holiday.
