Destination Guide
Welcome
Tofo is one of Mozambique’s best-known beach towns, and its reputation is built almost entirely on what’s in the water. It’s a globally recognised whale shark and manta ray hotspot, home to the Marine Megafauna Foundation, a research organisation founded in Tofo in 2009 that has spent over a decade and a half studying and protecting the marine megafauna that make this stretch of coast so distinctive.
Beyond the marine life, Tofo carries a genuine surf-town character, a lively social scene, a well-known beach break, and a relaxed, slightly less polished energy than some of the more resort-driven destinations further north. It’s a place people come specifically for the ocean, not just a beach backdrop to a resort stay.
Arrival
Guests typically fly into Inhambane Airport via Maputo or Johannesburg, then complete a short transfer of around 26 minutes by taxi or rideshare to Tofo itself. Self-drive travellers exploring southern Mozambique’s coastal route also commonly stop at Tofo between Vilanculos and destinations further south.
Once you’re here
Tofo’s town centre, beach, market and restaurants are all within easy walking distance of most accommodation. Diving and snorkelling excursions are arranged directly through local dive operators, and day trips to Barra Peninsula are a short taxi or transfer away.
Seasons
Whale sharks are present in Tofo’s waters throughout much of the year, with the clearest overall diving conditions falling in the cooler, drier months from roughly May to September. Manta ray sightings peak somewhat later in that window, and humpback whale migration typically runs from around June to September, adding a strong seasonal draw during the mid-year months. The warmer months from November to March bring warmer swimming water but a higher chance of tropical storms, which can affect diving and boat conditions.
On the water and beyond
Local flavour
Casa na Praia’s beachfront restaurant and lounge blend Mediterranean-inspired flavours with fresh, locally caught Indian Ocean seafood, prawns and lobster in particular are consistently highlighted. Beyond individual properties, Tofo’s market and casual beachfront eateries give the town a more informal, backpacker-friendly food scene than some of Mozambique’s more resort-driven destinations.
Where things sit
The heart of the town, home to Casa na Praia Tofo and within a five-minute walk of the market, bars and restaurants that give Tofo its social energy.
A short drive north, home to some of the region's best reef systems and a quieter, more design-led alternative to Tofo's livelier centre.
Good to know
Tofo sits within a malaria area, standard precautions and pre-travel medical advice are recommended. As with any Mozambique diving destination, confirming a dive operator’s safety credentials and equipment standards before booking is worth doing directly rather than assuming.
Trip planning
Enough time for a couple of dive or snorkel excursions and a genuine feel for the town.
Better suited to serious divers wanting multiple whale shark or manta ray outings, or travellers combining Tofo with Barra Peninsula reef diving nearby.
