Welcome

Welcome to Heins Manor House

Heins at Kleine Liebe is a fourth-generation working wine and pork farm in the heart of the Cape Winelands, just outside Stellenbosch.

Originally known as De Clapmuts Farm, the property’s story stretches back to the days of the Dutch East India Company, when it served as a halfway station and cattle outpost between Cape Town and Paarl. Since 1946, four generations of the Heins family have farmed the land, producing premium wine grapes and high-quality pork with the same values of integrity and tradition that built the estate.

For Hello Mozambique guests, Heins is typically the Cape Town half of a wine-and-beach itinerary, a genuine working farm experience, rather than a polished tourist-facing estate, offering a grounded, authentic introduction to the Cape Winelands before heading east to the Mozambican coast.

Getting there

Location and Getting There

Heins sits on De Clapmuts Farm in Stellenbosch, in the heart of South Africa’s Cape Winelands, roughly halfway between Cape Town and Paarl/Franschhoek. Its position puts it within easy reach of Stellenbosch town and the wider Winelands region, while Cape Town International Airport is a comfortable drive away.

Guests typically fly into Cape Town International Airport, then complete a straightforward road transfer to the estate, one of the more accessible starting points for a Southern Africa itinerary given Cape Town’s strong international flight connections.

Where to stay

Accommodation

Accommodation at Heins centres on the historic Manor House at Kleine Liebe, renovated in 1823 and renowned locally for having some of the highest ceilings of any home in the world. Guests can relax in one of three modern, en-suite rooms, each offering a comfortable double bed, private kitchenette, bathroom and mountain views, along with private outdoor seating areas.

The overall style favours a warm, homely farm-stay atmosphere over five-star polish, quality linens, well-equipped kitchenettes and genuine Cape Dutch character, well suited to couples or small families wanting a peaceful, authentic Winelands base.

Experiences and Activities

Wine tasting is naturally the centrepiece of a Heins stay, with the estate’s own label, including Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Rosé and Shiraz, available to taste at cellar-door prices. The Kleine Liebe Deli and Restaurant, within walking distance of the Manor House, serves the farm’s own premium pork products alongside wine, gourmet cheeses and freshly baked goods.

Beyond the estate itself, Heins’ central Stellenbosch location makes it an easy base for exploring the wider Cape Winelands, with numerous other estates, restaurants and Stellenbosch town all within a short drive.

Food and drink

Dining

The Kleine Liebe Deli and Restaurant serves the farm’s own pork products alongside its wines, with gourmet cheeses, freshly baked goods and picnic spreads also available for guests wanting a relaxed, farm-to-table meal. The rustic Kleine Liebe venue also hosts weddings and celebrations, reflecting the estate’s dual role as both a working farm and an events destination.

Seasons

Best Time to Visit

The Cape Winelands enjoy a Mediterranean climate, with the warmer, drier months from November to March offering the most reliable weather for wine tasting and exploring the estate’s grounds. The cooler, wetter winter months from June to August bring a quieter, more atmospheric side to the Winelands, with harvest season typically running from February to April.

Who Heins Manor House Is Best For

Comparison

Good to know

Practical Information

Heins operates as a working farm alongside its accommodation and dining offering, so guests should expect a genuine agricultural setting rather than a purely leisure-focused resort. The estate’s cellar and restaurant keep regular opening hours, generally 10am to 6pm, so it’s worth checking current hours when planning tastings or a meal.

Worth noting the malaria field here should genuinely read “No” or be left blank rather than defaulting to “Yes, precautions advised” the way every Mozambique property has, Stellenbosch is not a malaria area, and copying the standard line forward on autopilot would be a real factual error worth catching now before it happens across future non-Mozambique properties too.
