Mozambique is home to some of Africa’s most distinctive properties, and part of what makes the country worth returning to is just how different those properties are from one another. A design-led island Residence, a fully serviced exclusive-use lodge inside a private conservation area, and a mainland hotel with an infinity pool that spills into the ocean are all technically “Mozambique stays,” yet they deliver almost entirely different holidays. Whether the plan is a romantic getaway, a family holiday or a solo retreat, these four properties are a good starting point for understanding just how wide that range really is.
01Shakati Beach Lodge
Shakati Beach Lodge occupies a secluded bay within The Sanctuary, a 30,000-hectare protected conservation area near Vilanculos, a rare combination of beach and bush within a single, fully protected property. Six bedroom suites accommodate up to fourteen guests on a fully inclusive, exclusive-use basis, making it a natural fit for family groups, groups of friends, or corporate retreats wanting the whole lodge to themselves.
What sets Shakati apart from most beach lodges in the area is The Sanctuary itself, home to a genuinely diverse range of game species alongside its diving, snorkelling and island-hopping activity list. It’s one of the few places in Mozambique where a proper game drive and a day on the water can both happen without leaving the property. Bookings run on a six-night minimum, reflecting its fully serviced, whole-lodge model.
02Tsai-Tsai Mozambique
Tsai-Tsai isn’t a single lodge at all, it’s a curated portfolio of privately owned luxury villas and boats on North Beach in Vilanculos, built on more than thirty years of experience in high-end Mozambican hospitality. Most villas are self-catering by default, though select properties in the collection can also be booked fully serviced, with a private chef and an all-inclusive meals-and-drinks package, giving guests the flexibility to choose either.
The real strength of the portfolio is its marine fleet and local knowledge, boats can be hired directly to explore the Bazaruto Archipelago, arrange deep-sea fishing charters or simply spend a day on the water at a guest’s own pace. Villa sizes range from smaller couples’ retreats to larger properties sleeping around ten, making it a flexible option for groups planning a wedding or milestone celebration across multiple villas at once.
“A family group can choose to self-cater for a relaxed, low-cost stay, while a couple celebrating an anniversary in a different villa can opt for the fully inclusive experience instead.”
03Tsai-Tsai Mozambique
Set above the shoreline in Vilankulo itself, Vilanculos Beach Lodge offers a different kind of stay to the remote island lodges further offshore, an infinity pool that appears to spill straight into the Indian Ocean, direct views across to the Bazaruto Archipelago, and complimentary tarred-road transfers just minutes from Vilanculos Airport. It works as well as a standalone beach holiday as it does a comfortable base for exploring the wider archipelago on day trips.
Guests staying here have easy access to the full range of Bazaruto Archipelago experiences via short boat excursions, snorkelling, scuba diving, dhow sailing and day trips to Magaruque and Benguerra islands, alongside horse riding on the beach, an on-site Express Day Spa and a restaurant known locally for its seafood. For travellers who want ocean views and beach access without the added cost and logistics of a boat or helicopter transfer, it’s one of the more practical choices on this list.
04Azura Benguerra Island
Azura Benguerra Island is the flagship of the Azura Retreats collection and one of the most talked-about luxury lodges in the Bazaruto Archipelago. Reached only by a scenic helicopter transfer across the turquoise channel from the mainland, its seventeen villas each have direct beach access, a private beach sala and a dedicated private host managing every detail of the stay, from meal timing to activity bookings.
Two Mile Reef, among the archipelago’s most celebrated dive sites, sits just offshore, and the lodge’s rates are generally full board, covering meals, house drinks, the private host and a range of land and water activities. It’s widely considered the benchmark lodge against which other island properties in Mozambique are measured, and the combination of a Kapama safari followed by a stay here has become one of the region’s most requested honeymoon itineraries.

Insider tip
- Book early:for peak travel season (roughly June to September), especially for exclusive-use properties like Shakati that require a full-lodge booking.
- Check the model:before booking, since these four properties span self-catering, fully inclusive and everything in between, it’s worth confirming exactly what’s covered in the rate.
- Match the transfer to the trip:Vilanculos Beach Lodge’s road transfer suits shorter stays and simpler logistics, while Azura Benguerra’s helicopter arrival is part of the experience itself
